Best Things to Do in Pismo Beach
1. Pismo State Beach
One of the most popular attractions in Pismo Beach is the Pismo State Beach. This beach is famous for its wide sandy shoreline and crystal-clear waters. It stretches for miles, and visitors can enjoy a variety of activities here, such as swimming, sunbathing, surfing, fishing, and camping.
The beach is also home to the Monarch Butterfly Grove, where visitors can see thousands of Monarch butterflies during their annual migration. See below for more info on this attraction.
If you’re looking for a more adventurous activity, you can rent an ATV and ride on the sand dunes at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. This is a unique experience that you won’t find in many other places, and it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping.
You can even drive your car out onto the beach, but I don’t recommend it unless you have 4-wheel drive. I’ve seen many cars get stuck in the sand.
2. Pismo Beach Pier
One of the most iconic attractions in Pismo Beach is the Pismo Beach Pier. This 1,370-foot-long wooden structure stretches out into the Pacific Ocean and is a must-visit spot for anyone visiting the area, whether you’re looking to fish, enjoy a stroll, or just take in the stunning views.
If you’re interested in fishing, the Pismo Beach Pier is a great spot to cast your line. You can catch a variety of fish, including halibut, perch, and rockfish. If you don’t have your own gear, there are several bait and tackle shops nearby where you can rent equipment.
Another popular activity at the Pismo Beach Pier is exploring the nearby sea caves. These caves are accessible by kayak or paddleboard and offer a unique perspective of the coastline. If you’re not comfortable exploring the caves on your own, there are several guided tours available.
The Pismo Beach Pier is also a popular spot for surfers. The waves here are known for being consistent and beginner-friendly, making it a great spot for those just starting out. If you don’t have your own surfboard, there are several surf shops nearby where you can rent equipment and take lessons.
3. Pismo Beach Pier Plaza
While you’re hanging around the pier, you’ll want to take some time to check out the pier plaza, which is where many of the oceanfront restaurants are, like Wooly’s, Cool Cat Cafe, Splash Cafe, and Cali Love Wine tasting room.
There are also quite a few shops to peruse to find some souvenirs. For me, the best part of the plaza is the people watching. This is where you’ll find the large Pismo Beach sign that draws many tourists for photos, there are skateboarders, and even a few outdoor chess tables that draw players to watch.
4. Inn at the Pier Rooftop Bar
Sunset at Pismo Beach is a spectacular sight to see. The best place in town to watch it, unless you’re just hanging out on the pier, is from the Inn at the Pier Rooftop Bar.
Located right across the street from the pier, you can sit up at the bar at a table overlooking the ocean and watch the sun dip below the horizon with a martini in hand.
The bar also has a food menu, so you could stay up there for dinner too, if you like. We got a lovely seat right along the railing, and really enjoyed the color show.
5. Shell Beach
If you’re looking for a quieter and more secluded beach experience, Shell Beach is the perfect spot for you. Located just north of Pismo Beach, this small and charming beach community offers a variety of outdoor activities and breathtaking views.
One of the most popular activities in Shell Beach is sea kayaking. With its numerous caves, cliffs, coves, beaches, and rock formations, the coastline is perfect for exploring on a kayak. Central Coast Kayaks offers three-hour sea cave excursions that are open to both seasoned kayakers and novices.
For those who prefer to stay on land, there are plenty of hiking trails in the area. The Shell Beach Bluff Trail is a scenic 1.5-mile trail that offers stunning ocean views and is perfect for a leisurely stroll. For a more challenging hike, head to the nearby Pismo Preserve, which offers over 11 miles of trails through oak woodlands, coastal ridgelines, and canyons.
Shell Beach is also home to several great restaurants and cafes, including the popular Ventana Grill. With its stunning ocean views and delicious seafood dishes, it’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends. Other notable restaurants in the area include Zorro’s Cafe and Cantina and The Cliffs Resort.
6. Eldwayen Ocean Park
Eldwayen Ocean Park is very relaxing spot to enjoy the ocean view. This 1.5-mile oceanfront park is situated on a bluff above the ocean, providing stunning views of the Pacific.
While there is no dedicated parking lot, you can park on the street along Ocean Boulevard. Once you arrive, you can enjoy a grassy recreation area, picnic tables and benches, and stairs that lead down to a sandy beach. During low tide, the beach is accessible, and you can explore the tide pools and see various sea creatures like sea stars, limpets, sea anemones, urchins, and crabs.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can rent an RV at the park and spend the night with the sound of the waves as your lullaby. Kayakers also put in here to explore the impressive shoreline, including the arches and caves below nearby Margo Dodd Park and Dinosaur Caves Park.
7. Monarch Grove Winery Tasting Room
If you’re a wine lover, you can’t miss visiting the Monarch Grove Winery Tasting Room in Pismo Beach. This family-owned boutique winery offers a selection of aromatic, fruit-forward, and low-tannin fine wines at a reasonable price. The tasting room is located at the end of West Grand Avenue, right at the train station, with its own free parking.
The tasting room is an intimate setting with artisan hand-crafted wines from locally grown grapes in a boutique production that is family owned and operated. You can enjoy a flight of 6 wine tastings for $12 per person, which is a great value considering the quality of the wines.
The owners are super friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time chatting with them on a Saturday afternoon when we visited. The tasting room is also dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along. They have their own rather large winery dog to love on as well.
They offer wine by the glass or bottle, so you can enjoy your favorite wine while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
8. Tastes of the Valleys
Another wine tasting opportunity you won’t want to miss is the Tastes of the Valleys Wine Bar & Shop at 911 Price Street. Recognized by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as one of the top 20 wine bars in America, this wine bar offers nearly every wine in stock by the glass – DAILY! With a wine list approaching 1000 wines, it can’t be beat.
You can sample wines by the glass or in flights, and the knowledgeable staff is always happy to help you find the perfect wine to suit your taste. They also offer a variety of wine-related gifts and accessories, so you can take a piece of your experience home with you.
The atmosphere at Tastes of the Valleys is cozy and intimate, with a warm and welcoming vibe. The staff is very friendly, and the wine selection is unparalleled. Whether you’re looking for a romantic date spot or a fun night out with friends, Tastes of the Valleys is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some of the best wine on the Central Coast.
9. Pismo Beach Golf Course
This oceanfront Par 3, 9-hole course is perfect for both beginners and experienced golfers, and offers stunning views of the ocean and surrounding hills.
With affordable rates and a friendly staff, the Pismo Beach Golf Course is a must-visit destination for any golf enthusiast. They don’t reserve tee times, they do a first come first tee system, which I think makes it much easier for visitors to get in.
Being that the course is right next to the sand dunes, this will be a very unique golfing experience.
10. Off-Roading
Off-roading is a must-try in Pismo Beach. It’s the perfect place for it. The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Area is the only place in California where you can legally drive on the beach. With 1,500 acres of sand dunes, it’s the perfect playground for off-road enthusiasts.
You can bring your own vehicle or rent one from the many rental companies in the area. The state issues day-use permits on demand, and it costs just $5 to register your vehicle for off-roading. Motorcycles, four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and dune buggies are allowed, along with campers and larger vehicles.
Before heading out, make sure to check the tide schedule and weather conditions. It’s best to go when the tide is low, and the weather is clear. Also, be aware of the rules and regulations of the park. Stay within the designated riding areas, and follow the speed limit of 15 mph.
If you’re new to off-roading, take a guided tour with one of the many tour companies in the area. They’ll provide you with all the necessary equipment and safety gear, and guide you through the dunes. It’s a great way to learn the ropes and make the most of your off-roading experience.
11. Kayaking
With its stunning coastline and calm waters, Pismo is the perfect place to go kayaking. There are several companies that offer kayak tours and rentals, including Central Coast Kayaks, Pismo Beach Surf Shop, and Pismo Beach Dive Shop & Kayak Rentals.
One of the highlights of kayaking in Pismo Beach is the opportunity to explore the many caves and coves along the coastline. You can paddle through sea caves and under arches, and even spot wildlife like sea lions and seals. The tours are typically 2-3 hours long and include all necessary equipment like shorty wetsuits, booties, life vests, and helmets. Some companies even offer free photos of your adventure.
If you’re new to kayaking, don’t worry. The tours are suitable for all skill levels, and guides will provide instruction and guidance throughout the trip. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about the local marine life and ecology.

One of the most popular campgrounds in the area is the North Beach Campground at Pismo Beach State Beach. This campground has 103 campsites that are located in a grassy field just a few yards away from the beach. Each campsite can accommodate up to 8 people and comes equipped with fire rings, restrooms, and pay showers. Pets are allowed on a leash, and there is a senior citizen discount available.
Another great option is the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. This campground allows you to camp right on the beach and offers a unique off-road experience. However, keep in mind that getting into the camping area can be tricky, and there are no defined spaces. Tents are allowed, and the vehicle length limit is 40 feet.
If you’re looking for a more secluded camping experience, consider staying at the Pismo Coast Village RV Resort. This resort offers a variety of camping options, including RV sites, tent sites, and cabins. The resort also offers a variety of amenities, including a heated pool, hot tubs, and a general store.

This is always my first stop whenever we’re in Pismo Beach. If I could take gallons of it home with me, I would. Oh wait – you can take it home!
This restaurant has been serving up award-winning clam chowder since 1989 and has become a local favorite. Their clam chowder is so popular that they serve over 40,000 gallons of it every year! It’s no surprise that they have received requests from Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines for their recipe.
The chowder is served in a cup or a bread bowl and is the perfect meal for a chilly day. The bread bowl is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the chowder is creamy and flavorful. In addition to their famous clam chowder, Splash Café also offers other fresh seafood entrees.
