Capitola is a charming beach town just south of Santa Cruz that offers a variety of fun activities, whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, explore the town’s rich history, or try some delicious local cuisine.

A visit to Capitola gives you an opportunity to explore two side-by-side cities that almost merge together in the middle. It’s a bit more laid back and less touristy than Santa Cruz, if you’re looking to get away from the boardwalk.

Capitola State beach and pier

I’m not typically a huge fan of the touristy boardwalk area in Santa Cruz, but I do love visiting Capitola, which feels more like a small community. It can get really crowded on summer weekends, but otherwise it’s a great place to hang out for a few hours, grab a meal with a view, or even visit a museum or two.

You will likely be surprised to find so many fun things to do in Capitola, based on its size, but trust me, there’s plenty to do there.

Capitola State Beach is a popular tourist destination located in Santa Cruz County, California. The beach is known for its picturesque views, gentle waves, and colorful beach houses. It’s not only great for swimming and surfing, but it’s also a great place to explore.

Take a stroll along the beach and check out the colorful houses that line the shore. You can also rent kayaks or paddleboards and explore the waters.

The history of Capitola State Beach dates back to the mid-19th century when it was originally known as Soquel Landing. In 1869, a businessman named Samuel A. Hall purchased the land and began building a hotel and cottages.

He named the area Capitola-by-the-Sea, after a popular novel at the time. The resort town grew in popularity, attracting visitors from all over California.

There is a wooden pier at Capitola State Beach, but it’s currently closed (as of 2023) due to storm damage. The plan is for it to reopen in summer 2024.

Swimming and Surfing

Mondos Beach

Capitola Beach and New Brighton State Beach are two popular spots for swimming and surfing. Capitola Beach is known for its calm waters, making it a great spot for families with young children. New Brighton State Beach is a bit more challenging, with bigger waves that attract experienced surfers.

If you want to learn to surf at either of these beaches, you can contact one of the local companies. Capitola Beach Company offers surf and stand up paddle boarding lessons daily, year round. Capitola Surf & Paddle offer private and semi-private surf lessons.

Capitola Village

Capitola Village is a quaint area that’s perfect for strolling around and exploring. You’ll find a variety of unique shops, restaurants, and cafes. For a drink, there’s Margaritaville or just a few steps up San Jose Ave you’ll find Capitola Wine Bar & Merchants.

If you’re into a bit of shopping, you’ll find some unique handmade treasures at the Craft Gallery. We love the cute boutique home goods at Clementine & Co. You’ll find beachy clothing at Santa Cruz Apparel or Coastal Life Company.

Dining at Local Eateries

If you want to get a little further away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy area, there are lots of other great places. Gayle’s Bakery & Rosticceria has earned its stripes with both locals and tourists for its mouthwatering baked goods and on-point meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that you can snag on the go.

Shadowbrook Restaurant captivates you the moment you set eyes on its whimsical red trolley, verdant surroundings, and sprawling riverside dining area. Oh, and let’s not forget about the top-tier food and beverages that have racked up some awards.

The space itself is unpretentious and welcoming, if a bit small. There are also a few tables outside with umbrellas. Their current offerings are listed on a chalkboard so you can see all the details before you choose.

Visiting the Capitola Historical Museum

The Capitola Historical Museum serves as a treasure trove of local history, housed in a quaint setting. Here, you’ll encounter an array of exhibits that peel back the layers of Capitola’s past, from its Native American roots to its evolution as a seaside resort.

The Venetian Court is a charming courtyard that’s home to a variety of shops and restaurants. You’ll know where it is when you see the colorful fronts of the cottages from the beachfront.

In the early 1900s, the Capitola Venetian Hotel was built, which became a popular destination for Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable and Carol Lombard.

The hotel was eventually destroyed in a fire in the 1920s, but the Venetian Court, a row of colorful beach houses, still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Capitola State Beach officially became a state park in 1949.

New Brighton State Beach

New Brighton state beach

Whether you’re pitching a tent for the weekend or just craving a few hours of quality beach time, New Brighton State Beach is a Capitola gem you shouldn’t overlook.

You’ll find towering pine and cypress trees lining the cliff edges, offering a natural canopy that sets this beach apart from others. It’s a perfect spot for camping, with sites that give you a vantage point over the ocean as if the beach were your own personal backdrop.

The beach itself is a canvas for various activities. You can dig your toes into the sand, book in hand, or set out to build the sandcastle of your dreams. The water calls to those who prefer a bit more action—swimming, paddleboarding, or even kayaking if you’re up for it. There’s also a sweet spot for fishing if you’re looking to reel in dinner.

But here’s the thing that strikes me most about New Brighton State Beach: the sunsets. Yeah, I know, beaches and sunsets go together like grilling and summer, but hear me out. The way the sun lowers itself behind the horizon here is like a well-timed symphony, with colors you’ll swear were pulled from an artist’s palette.

Capitola Wharf

Capitola wharf

The Capitola Wharf extends into the waters of Monterey Bay like an open invitation to explore. Ideal for both fishing and taking in the sweeping ocean views, the pier is a focal point of activity in Capitola. From sunrise fishermen to sunset strollers, the wharf is a microcosm of the community’s maritime culture.

Unfortunately the storms in early 2023 majorly damaged the wharf and it hasn’t been open since. There is a project underway to restore the wharf that is supposed to be completed in summer 2024. Until then, you can’t go out on the wharf at all.
