If you’re looking to enjoy some coastal scenery and find some awesome beaches that aren’t crowded, Pescadero is a great place to visit. This small town is located on the coast of San Mateo County, and it has beautiful beaches, which offer a chance to relax, swim, surf, and soak up the sun.
Even if you’re from California, you might not have heard much about Pescadero, and it’s most certainly not on your short list of places to visit if you aren’t aware of how great the beaches are there. I didn’t figure this out until I visited on a road trip from San Francisco to San Diego. It’s a really nice respite from the busier beaches.
So if you like to stretch out on the sand and not have to share space with anyone else, you’re in for a treat with these beaches to visit in Pescadero. The long sandy beaches are absolutely perfect for those who like to have their space and a little bit of peace and quiet.

Getting to Pescadero
Pescadero does not have its own airport, so unless you drive there from where ever you live in California or surrounding areas, getting there will involve a flight into one of the nearby airports, followed by a drive.
You can fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Jose International Airport (SJC), or Oakland International Airport (OAK).
If you land at SFO or OAK, you can rent a car (we recommend going through Discover Cars) and drive to Pescadero, which will take about 1 hour, depending on traffic. There are more flights from more location to SFO than SJC, but I prefer landing at SJC for the ease of it.
The drive from Los Angeles is about 6:20 hours, and 8:20 hours from San Diego. It’s 4:45 hours from Santa Barbara.

- Lifeguards are staffed year-round at the permanent lifeguard stations in San Diego. They are there from 9am to dusk. However, avoid being too reliant on lifeguards. Always watch your kids and be aware of the tide.
- When going to a beach with your family, always watch out for signs that indicate if the area is meant for swimming or surfing.
- Glass containers are not allowed on the beach and dogs are not allowed between 9 am and 4 pm from Nov 1 through March 31, 9 am and 6 pm from April 1 through Oct 31.
